Teeth Whitening Salons

7 Australian Teeth Whitening Salons Compared: SmileBar vs the Rest

Most whitening rooms look the same. You sit in a chair, a light goes on, and you leave about an hour later. Tooth whitening only changes the colour of natural enamel. It does not rebuild a tooth, and it does not whiten a crown.

The useful differences are simpler than the ads. How strong is the gel? Is a dentist involved? Can you book the same service again without hunting for a new room?

What every salon can and can’t do

In Australia, only a registered dentist can use gels stronger than 6% hydrogen peroxide. Salon treatments sit at that limit, or they use a peroxide-free gel. That is why a dental clinic often charges $500 to $1,500, while a salon hour is usually closer to $200.

A salon session can lift yellow or brown stains from coffee, tea and red wine. It will not fix grey or medication-related colour. Crowns, veneers and white fillings do not bleach. If you whiten the teeth around a front crown, the crown can look dull next to them.

Skip it if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have decay, gum disease, cracks or very sensitive teeth. A salon consult is not a dental check. Extras cover sometimes rebates dentist whitening. A salon visit usually does not. Pay for it as a beauty appointment, and recheck the price before you book.

Shade claims are not comparable. Studios do not use one national scale. Ask them to record your starting shade and show you a photo in the same light.

The national chain

The smilebar menu is $199 for 60 minutes and $249 for 90 minutes. Both use 6% hydrogen peroxide and an LED lamp. Online booking is advertised at $50 off. It has traded since 2011, reports more than 10,000 treatments, and has rooms in six capitals. One number covers them: 1300 757 641.

That is the practical advantage. If you move between cities, or you want a voucher someone else can redeem, one booking system is easier than five local studios. Their material says a typical result is about six shades, sometimes up to 12. Treat that as their claim, not a promise.

A dental check is not included. If you have not seen a dentist in the past year, go before you book. Gel on plaque wastes the hour.

A network, not one clinic

PureSmile looks similar on price. A peroxide-free session is $179 or $199. A 6% session is $249. Online booking is listed at 10% off. The difference is the setup. You are often booking a partner clinic, not a brand-owned room. Dentist-led packages start at $499.

Ask who will be in the room before you pay a deposit. A cosmetic technician and a registered dentist are not the same service.

Sydney’s west, sold by the minute

Smile Labs in Parramatta and Penrith prices by time. Fifteen minutes is $124. Thirty minutes is $174. Forty-five minutes is $224. An hour is $274. A short consult is free. They also place tooth gems, from $119.

Use the short visits as a top-up. For a first visit with heavy staining, book the hour.

Brisbane, if you want more time

White & Bright is one studio at Level 38, Riparian Plaza, 71 Eagle Street. Sixty minutes is $299. Ninety minutes is $399. The gel is still 6%. You are paying for a longer visit and a dedicated room, not a stronger product. A two-session package is $599.

Worth it if you are already in the Brisbane CBD and the staining needs the extra half hour. Not worth a long trip if a closer clinic can do the same gel.

Smaller rooms

The Teeth Whitening Boutique works from Bondi Junction, Peregian Springs and a home studio in Capalaba. The offer is a first session, follow-ups and a membership-style plan, with a top-up suggested every three to four months. Get a quote before you compare it with a $199 headline.

Ora Dental Spa, formerly Bondi Bright, works from Surry Hills and the Northern Rivers. Sessions run from $300 to $530. The gel is sold as gentler, with less peroxide. A hygienist clean is also available, and that clean is the part a health fund may rebate. If sensitivity is your main worry, ask what is in the gel.

Hello White is a Melbourne mobile service run by a dental assistant. Take-home kits are about $130 to $230. If a salon visit feels like too much, compare those kits with other teeth whitening kits before you book a chair. The in-home session fee was not clearly published, so get it in writing, including travel.

Which one to book

  • Healthy teeth, coffee stains, and you travel between cities: book the national 60 or 90-minute session.
  • Crowns, grey staining, or you want a dentist involved: book a dental practice, or a dentist package. Do not expect a salon to match that.
  • You live in western Sydney and already know your shade: use a short top-up. Book the hour the first time.
  • You are in the Brisbane CBD and happy to pay for time: use the Eagle Street studio.
  • You want a smaller room in Bondi, Noosa or northern New South Wales: compare the Boutique and Ora on the actual gel, not the fit-out.
  • You are in Melbourne and do not want to travel: get the mobile fee in writing first.

Before any session, clean off tartar, photograph your starting shade, and skip coffee, tea, red wine and curry for 48 hours. A lot of the colour people think they have lost goes in that window.

If you are still choosing between a salon, a dentist and home products, start with a plain look at your options on i55 Health and match the product to the stain, not the advert.
